GREAT ORMOND STREET HOSPITAL''S CALAMITOUS APPROACH
Their treatment of Charlie Gard and his family has been deeply disturbing and has been a public relations disaster for the hospital.
Sometimes events reveal what otherwise remains hidden and Charlie's plight has exposed a deep malaise at the heart of Great Ormond Street.
A comprehensive review must take place, and changes made, so that the wishes of parents, protecting and fighting for the health of their baby, must be respected, as must their desire to nurse their beloved at home.
A hospital must never again become a fortress and a prison. Doctors must never again usurp the love of devoted parents. Courts must never again barricade a child from being able to receive treatment offered elsewhere.
Charlie's plight has become a plight in which so many ordinary families have shared.
I have often been incensed when doctors and nurses, acting beyond their remit, have denied proper requests from families for different approaches to be taken towards their loved ones, even refusing to facilitate their palliative and terminal care at home.
The health services of the country should not bully patients and their families or abrogate a person's right to choose their destiny.
